Background

Amatheon Agri Zambia (AAZ) is part of Amatheon Agri Holdings, a European agribusiness developing sustainable projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. AAZ was founded in 2011 to establish large-scale commercial farming operations in the Big Concession farm block, Mumbwa District. Since then, it has developed 3,000 hectares for rain-fed and irrigated cropping activities, manages a breeding herd of cattle and a feedlot. It operates irrigated pivots and state of the art machinery to successfully grow crops such as maize, soya and wheat.

Amatheon combines large-scale farming operations with successful engagement of smallholder farmers through its Outgrower Programme. The Programme provides free training in Conservation Farming and business skills, access to market by establishing rural depots to sell inputs and buy grain and livestock, and facilitates linkage between emerging farmers and financial services.

Amatheon is committed to act in a manner that is socially responsible and reflects sound environmental management practices. The Environmental Officer is required to act in the interests of AAZ by managing all aspects associated with planning, implementation and monitoring of environmental activities for agricultural operations in Zambia.

Job Summary

  • Lead implementation and adherence to Environmental Management Plans
  • Monitor and evaluate environmental indicators as per respective Environmental Management Plan
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and social policies
  • Engage surrounding communities through meetings and an Environmental and Community Sustainability Committee
  • Support social and environmental impact assessments
  • Support design and implementation of social and environmental projects
  • Support surveys, contribute to data collection and mapping
  • Undertake research on social and environmental best practice in agricultural operations and advise the Management on mechanisms for continuous improvement
  • Draft reports, new policies and update existing ones

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experiences in private sector, civil society or government bodies in contexts of environmental management
  • Experience in developing, implementing and monitoring of Environmental Management Plans, preferably in contexts of agriculture
  • Deep knowledge of the Zambian culture, preferably speaking English, Nyanja and Bemba
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and public speaking with local and multinational audiences.
  • Good experience of community meeting/programmes facilitation skills
  • Ability to relate to grass roots participants and high-ranking government and local government officials
  • Articulate and straight forward in transmitting baseline information to the Managing Director

Education, Qualifications and Experience

  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study
  • A minimum of 3 years of practical work experience
  • Experience with Zambian Environmental Management Authority processes is a strong plus

The Liaison Officer is required to act in the interests of AAZ by managing all aspects of internal and external communication, and stakeholder relations including Government, community and media.

Job Summary

  • Act as the company’s Spokesperson and represents its interests across a variety of stakeholders, including local and national Government, surrounding communities, clients, partners and the media
  • Support the management of the Environmental and Community Sustainability Committee
  • Administer all community complaints and grievances in line with the grievance policy
  • Maintain continuous liaison with HR Manager, labour representatives, unions and the workforce to detect and address social matters that arise
  • Support social baseline surveys surrounding land being developed; maintain social baseline records and produce survey results
  • Support drafting documents for the EIA processes
  • Plan and implement project communications strategies (newsletters and such) with affected stakeholders and record and report stakeholder opinions
  • Cooperate with Communications Department by reporting about activities on the ground in a presentable format, including photographs

Job Requirements

  • Ability to relate to grassroots participants, high-ranking Government and local Government officials
  • Significant experiences in employing participatory community/stakeholder engagement strategies or methods
  • Assertive but diplomatic
  • Mature with high degree of integrity
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent MS office skills in Word, Excel and PPT
  • Fluent in written and spoken English, Nyanja; knowledge of Kaonde, Tonga, Bemba a plus
  • Talented in writing texts
  • Deep knowledge of the Zambian culture
  • Reliability, transparency and honesty are a must

Education, Qualifications and Experience

  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study
  • A minimum of 3 years of practical work experience in this field
  • PR, Communications, Journalism experience
  • Photography is a plus
